How to Brush a Dog’s Teeth for the First Time

The first brushing session should feel easy. If your dog is worried, slow down. A calm 15-second session is better than a stressful two-minute struggle.

Step-by-step

  1. Let your dog sniff the toothbrush and taste dog-safe toothpaste.
  2. Touch the outside of the muzzle, then reward.
  3. Lift the lip briefly and reward again.
  4. Brush a few front teeth in small circles.
  5. Stop before your dog gets frustrated.

Build the habit

Repeat short sessions daily. Add more teeth gradually, especially along the gumline where plaque builds. If your dog shows pain or bleeding, stop and ask your veterinarian.
